Carr Green Primary School

Art & Design

Intent

Here at Carr Green, we recognise that a high-quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire, and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design with growing confidence. We believe it is an important part of developing our children’s individual creativity and ability to express their ideas and understanding.

Our Art curriculum provides opportunities for children to understand cultural heritages, expand diversity of thoughts and feelings, and acknowledge skills and personal tastes related to artwork. We do this by giving our pupils opportunities to explore, investigate, create, and evaluate art in a variety of forms, and should contribute to the quality of their lives, both within and beyond Carr Green.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Carr Green Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and linked to topics to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject. The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each art topic are mapped across each year group and are progressive throughout the school.

Knowledge and know-how are built on the foundations of Expressing Arts and Design in Early Years. Throughout KS1 and KS2 children are taught through a range of projects which cover the aspects of creation, generation of ideas, malleable materials, paper and fabrics, paint, ink, charcoal, pen, print, natural art, landscape, the work of significant people and thoughtful evaluation. Skills which are developed through Art and Design can be transferred across the curriculum and thus aid learning.

 We aim to ensure pupils:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences, both from first-hand experiences and imagination
  • Develop increasing confidence in the use of visual and tactile elements and experiences, and the ability to control materials, tools and techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about, and foster an enjoyment and appreciation of great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
