Carr Green Primary School

Science

Intent

At Carr Green Primary School, we are committed to encourage all children to think like Scientists, exploring the world around them and being inquisitive. Children learn the core scientific knowledge that has been identified within each key phase and topic set out in the National Curriculum. The skills, vocabulary and knowledge needed for children to work scientifically are developed through their time at Carr Green.

Children are offered exciting learning opportunities, giving them the skills to investigate, conduct experiments and follow a line of enquiry. Our pupils follow scientific processes, making real discoveries about the ever-changing world around them, right from our nursery onwards.

The Science curriculum is carefully planned across the school, allowing excellent progress to be made and relevant links with other subjects to be created within our exciting topics.

Implementation

Science is taught discretely across school in blocked units, this enables our pupils to learn more deeply and create a real love of learning for the certain topic. It allows children to acquire more knowledge and skills and helps cement the learning journey for them, as well as ensuring all the national curriculum objectives are covered.

Science is taught on a two-year cycle, due to our mixed age classes. This was carefully mapped out to show clear progression and continuity of scientific knowledge and skills throughout the pupil’s time at Carr Green.

Our topics are engaging, each having planned investigations, allowing children to regularly follow a line of enquiry. Each topic is started with a knowledge organiser. This is used as an overview of the topic and a tool to revisit previous learning, specific vocabulary and sticky knowledge. Science working walls reflect information shared on the knowledge organisers, so the children have a clear understanding of the scientific learning journey.
